Lagos, Feb. 5, 2018 (NAN) A 23-year-old man, Kingsley Opara, who allegedly shoplifted a phone worth N37, 500, was on Monday brought before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Opara, who resides in Agege area of Lagos, however, is being tried for stealing.
He entered a plea of `not guilty’ and granted the accused bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in like sum.
The Magistrate, Mrs O. I. Raji, who gave the ruling, said the surety must be gainfully employed with an evidence of two years tax payment.
Earlier, Police Prosecutor Sidikat Adebisi told the court that the accused committed the offence on Dec. 29 at No. 124, Moshalashi Alhaja, Agege, Lagos.
Adebisi said the accused came to the shop of the complainant, Mrs Olufunmi Yetunde, to steal the phone pretending to shop for goods.
She said the price tag on the phone is N37,500.
During Police investigation, it was discovered that only the accused entered the complainant’s shop when the phone was declared missing, Insp. Adebisi said.
The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the section stipulates a three-year jail term for offenders on conviction.
The case was adjourned until Feb. 17. (NAN)
