Abuja, 1, Feb, 2018 (NAN) Reports from Germany have confirmed that biometric gloves would be ready for the 2018 Formula One (F1) season, although it would not be made mandatory until next year.

Last year, German Sport Bild reported that the glove, developed by the Federation Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA), would include a 3mm sensor.

The sensor would feed lifesaving data to the medical team to help in the event of a serious crash.

Laurent Mekies, FIA’s deputy race director, confirmed that, “We asked ourselves how we could use state-of-the-art technology to help our medical team and therefore the drivers,” adding that, “The drivers are very supportive of this move to improve safety.”

The introduction of biometric glove is coming on the heels of the move by FIA to get rid of ‘grid girls’ who will no longer be seen in F1.

A new safety measure had to be introduced, hence the introduction of the glove which would help detect whether a driver is moving and breathing in the case of an accident.

Mekies said the device would also help to decide if the car has to be moved quickly to access the driver or whether recovery could be done more cautiously. (NAN)
