Lagos, Jan. 31, 2018 (NAN) The Lagos State Women Committee of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) said on Wednesday that its members would participate actively in politics to bring desired change in the next general elections.
The Chairwoman of the committee, Princess Olubunmi Arowoduye-Abikoye, gave the assurance in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) at the sixth delegates’ conference of the committee in Lagos.
Arowoduye-Abikoye said that women had suffered more in the polity and that they had always been at the receiving end of economic challenges.
“We can no longer keep quite. Our voices must be heard, especially in 2019 election. Many women bear the pain of various attacks and bomb blasts in the country.
“Women and children are mostly affected when companies are closed and workers are retrenched. The voice of women must be heard.’’
She said that women would no longer be relegated to the background in the affairs of the economy.
The unionist said that the committee had undergone training in “repositioning women for leadership position and women and leadership challenges in trade union administration in Nigeria,’’ to prepare for 2019.
The chairwoman said it was regrettable that the poverty level had increased because of job losses, reduction in wages and accumulated unpaid salaries, among others.
She urged women across the country to support one another and unite to vote women into political positions to alleviate their suffering.
The NLC Women Committee had its election during the conference, where Arowoduye-Abikoye was re-elected unopposed.
The new members of the executive include Elizabeth Pedro from the Non-Academic Student Union as first Vice-Chairperson, Olatayo Akintola from the Civil Service Union as second Vice-Chairperson and Alimat Oguaye from the Nigeria Union of Teachers as Secretary. (NAN)
