Lagos, Jan. 31, 2018 (NAN) The Managing Director of Lagos Water Corporation (LWC), Mr Muminu Badmus, on Wednesday urged water consumers in the state to use water judiciously, with the introduction of prepaid meters.
Badmus gave the advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos, saying a benefit to be derived from the prepaid meter is the discipline to use water optimally.
He explained that the prepaid meter begins reading as water flows from the tap fixed in an apartment or linkage within specified premises.
“The installation of the prepaid meters to households is free and it comes with card credit of N1, 750.
“As the water is being used, the meter stops dispensing water when credit of N1, 050 is remaining on the meter.
“This is for the occupant of the apartment or house to go to the nearest Water Corporation regional office to recharge the card.
“This will enable the meter to be formally registered as installed, and the profile of the user to be captured in the corporation’s data,” he said.
Badmus assured the public that the officials of the corporation would move around with vending machines to enable consumers to recharge at their respective estates.
According to him, the procedure will go a long way to ease customers’ problems.
He explained that the corporation’s rate in low density areas is 1,000 litres of water for N200, while consumers in high density areas pay N260 for 1,000 litres.
Badmus said that commercial users would pay N350 per 1,000 litres.
The managing director said the corporation would soon start the second phase of installation of meters in communities not yet reached after the delivery of additional meters.
NAN reports that about 24,000 houses benefited from prepaid meters that were installed in the first phase of the exercise in 2017. (NAN)
