Abuja, Jan. 31, 2018 (NAN) A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced a 22-year-old man, Zakari Abubakar, to six months imprisonment for stealing groundnut oil valued at N30,000.

The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, refused to give the convict any option of fine and said that the sentence would serve as deterrent to others.

Sadiq advised the convict to desist from committing crimes and look for a good source of income.

The convict who resides at Wuse Zone 2 Abuja had pleaded guilty to the one-count charge and begged the court to temper justice with mercy.

Abubakar told the court that he was a security man, but did not know what came over him and made him to commit crimes.

The Prosecutor, Florence Avhioboh, had told the court that one Aliyu Garo of Utako Market, Abuja, reported the matter at the Utako Police Station, on Jan. 22.

Avhioboh said that the convict, under the pretence of buying groundnut oil, stole two 25 litre cans of the groundnut oil valued at N30, 000 and disappeared to an unknown destination.

He said during police investigation, one of the cans was recovered.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened Section 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
