Driver arraigned for alleged dangerous driving, causing death

Lagos, Jan. 26, 2018 (NAN) A commercial driver, Omodele Obasa, 38, was on Friday arraigned in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos for alleged dangerous driving and causing death.

Obasa, a resident of Sango in Ogun, was alleged to have caused the death of a 28-year-old Nurudeen Sobitan.

According to the prosecutor, Insp. Clement Okuoimose, the accused committed the offences on Jan. 11 on Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway.

Okuoimose said that the accused drove a Volkswagen bus with registration no. LND 741XU, and had no driver’s licence, road worthiness and hackney certificates.

“The accused drove his vehicle in a dangerous and reckless manner, having no regard for other road users and caused the death of a pedestrian.”

The prosecutor further said that the accused, who was speeding, lost control of the vehicle, knocked down and killed the victim who wanted to board a bus.

He said that the offences contravened Sections 20 (1) Road Traffic Act, Cap 172 Vol. 45, Law of Lagos State of Nigeria 2012.

Meanwhile, the accused pleaded not guilty to the offences and was granted bail in the sum of N250,000 with two sureties in like sum.

The Magistrate, Mrs Y.O. Ekogbulu, said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years’ tax payment to Lagos State Government.

The case was adjourned until Feb. 7 for mention. (NAN)
