Abuja, Jan. 25, 2018 (NAN) Mr Godson Moneke, the Registrar, Quantity Surveyor Registration Board of Nigeria (QSRBN), has warned Nigerians on the dangers associated with engaging the services of quacks in the built industry.

Moneke gave the warning in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Abuja.

He said that engaging the services of quacks in the profession could lead to the loss of lives and property.

According to him, the board is fighting to reduce the activities of quacks and non-registered quantity surveyors to the minimum.

“If you cut corners because of the fees involved in engaging a professional in setting up your building and at the final stage it collapses all the money and time spent will all be a waste.

“In the event of loss of lives the law will take it full course and you will be charged for murder or manslaughter.

“If you use a professional and there is problem of building collapse nobody will bother you, rather they will go for the professional in charge, who will bear the consequences involved and you will be exonerated.’’

Moneke said that quacks have no professional indemnity, adding that professional fees for quantity surveyors are regulated.

He said that the board prosecute quacks at the High Court, adding that when convicted a fee of N500,000 or an option of two years jail term or both would be given as sanction.

He added that fees collected by quacks when sum up at the long run would still amount to almost what a professional would charge.

“When you engage quacks you will find out that they will continue to collect small amount from time to time and by the time you sum it up it is almost the same as engaging the services of a professional.

“I do not think fees charge by any professional is much considering the nature and quality of work they do’’.

The registrar urged Nigerian to desist from patronising quacks, adding that they could `cause more harm than good’. (NAN)
