Man in court over alleged membership of  gang of thieves

Mararaba (Nasarawa State), Jan. 24, 2018 (NAN)  A 23-year-old man, Yasir Ibrahim, was on Wednesday arraigned in a Mararaba Upper Area Court, Nasarawa State, for allegedly belonging to a gang of thieves and in possession of cannabis sativa (a.k.a. Indian hemp).

The prosecutor, Cpl. Hamen Donald, told the court that the defendant committed the crime on Jan. 17, around 1.20 p.m. at Mararaba, Nasarawa State.

He said that the defendant, suspected to belong to a gang of thieves, was wearing mask and carrying weeds, suspected to be Indian hemp when he was arrested by a team of policemen.

The prosecutor also said that during interrogation, it was discovered that the accused had no means of livelihood, no place of abode and could not give satisfactory account of himself.

According to him, the offences are contrary to and punishable under Sections 306 and 405 of the Penal Code Law.

The accused, however, denied committing the offences.

The judge, Ibrahim Shekarau, granted him bail in the sum of N100, 000, with one surety in like sum.

The case was adjourned until Feb. 6, for hearing. (NAN)
