Lagos, Jan. 23, 2018 (NAN) A member of the House of Representatives, Mr Oghene Egoh, on Tuesday urged the nation’s youth to be focused, disciplined and principled to give the nation a brighter future.
Egoh, who is representing Amuwo Odofin Federal Constituency, made the call in Lagos at the end of a one-week training programme for youths.
The training centred on marketing of gas, cylinders/accessories, charcoal making, catering services and operation of restaurant, poultry farming and rabbit breeding.
The youth were also trained on dry cleaning and laundry service, events management, piggery, snail rearing and car wash operation.
Egoh said such programmes are important to empower beneficiaries with skills that would help them to be independent, employers of labour and also to take care of their families.
He said that he had empowered no fewer than 300 widows in the constituency last year and was impressed with how they were faring.
“I have also not taken the education of the Amuwo Odofin child for granted as I recognise the fact that the future of our nation lies in the youths.
“I therefore want all of us who have benefited from this programme to make the best use of it,’’ the lawmaker said.
Egoh said such empowerment would help in reducing social vices among youth, by keeping them positively engaged, thereby enhancing peace in the constituency and the state in general.
He said that the youth, if well nurtured, have the potential to make the nation great and to take its rightful place in the comity of nations.
The lawmaker promised to give grants to the beneficiaries and also link them up with organisations that could give them soft loans.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that resource persons for the training were drawn from the Small and Medium Enterprise Development Agency of Nigeria (SMEDAN).
A beneficiary, Miss Adebimpe Lawal, told NAN that she had learned how to make confectionery, cake and decorate venues of events.
She said that she had been empowered for a better lifetime through the programme, and commended the organisers for lending such support.
Also, Mr Emeka Ucheegbu who was trained in dry cleaning and laundry services, said he had been better equipped to offer professional services to his potential clients.(NAN)
