Democracy
Damaturu, Jan. 23, 2018 (NAN) The Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) on Tuesday, said strong internal democracy in political parties was imperative for the achievement of an enduring democratic process in any nation.
Chairman of IPAC in Yobe, Alhaji Umar Kukuri, said this in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Damaturu.
Kukuri said that the council would ensure that Nigeria had a stronger democratic process ahead of the 2019 general elections.
“One of the major challenges of Nigeria’s democracy is weak internal party democracy, specifically, during party primaries. We will encourage all stakeholders to build internal party democracy ahead of the elections.
“IPAC will encourage party leaders to improve on internal party democracy as a measure to strengthen Nigeria’s democracy,” he said.
Kukuri assured that the council would assist Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in the implementation of the 2019 elections time-table.
“Although Yobe is known for orderliness and respect for rule of law, we will ensure that this is upheld for peaceful electioneering across the state.
“IPAC will also convene a meeting of all political parties to deliberate on the importance of respecting the time-table.
“As a state, we are a victim of insurgency; we will not want to have any other form of violence and break down of our hard earned peace and security.
“We will, therefore, promote peaceful electioneering process in the state,” he said. (NAN)
