Defilement
By Moronke Boboye
Lagos, Jan. 22, 2018 (NAN) A suspected child defiler, 57-year-old Emmanuel Agwu, was on Monday granted a temporary reprieve on the orders of an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court.
Chief Magistrate Folakemi Davies-Abegunde admitted the accused to a bail of N500,000 in addition to two sureties in like sum.
She also ordered the accused to pay N50,000 into the account of the court’s Chief Registrar as part of the bail condition.
The accused, a trader, who resides at 16, Busari St., Igando, a suburb of Lagos, had pleaded not guilty to the charge of child defilement.
Police Prosecutor Racheal Donny, however, insisted that the accused committed the offence on Jan. 8 at his residence.
Donny said the mother of the eight-year-old girl sent her on an errand to the accused’s house and he decided to defile her.
“The girl was sent to collect two empty bottles of beer from the accused.
“The man defiled her and told her not to tell her mother. But on getting home, the woman saw blood stains on her child’s dress and she suspected that something had gone wrong,” he told the court.
“The girl told her mother what happened and the case was reported to the police, who immediately arrested the accused.”
The offence contravened Section 137 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the offence carries life imprisonment on conviction.
The case has been adjourned until Feb. 26 for mention. (NAN)
