Ibadan, Jan. 17, 2018(NAN) Oyo State Government has commenced `Operation Zero Tolerance’ for potholes across the state, aimed at bringing succour to road users.
Mr Gbenga Akintola, the Special Adviser to the Governor on Infrastructure, told newsmen of the operation in Ibadan on Wednesday, during a monthly ministerial briefing.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the Oyo State Road Maintenance Agency under Gov. Abiola Ajimobi has changed to Oyo State Public Works Department.
It is vested with the mandate of fixing deplorable roads, while the State Ministry of Works and Transport handles road construction.
Akintola stated that the effort of government was to ensure that deplorable roads across the state were fixed before the end of the dry season.
“We have started repairs of roads across the state. We have repaired roads in Ibadan, Ogbomoso, Oyo, Oke-Ogun and Ibarapa zones of the state. We have compiled several roads and are working on them now.
“What we are doing is to maximize the opportunity of the dry season in covering more mileage. We have the capacity to do all.
“We have chosen to start the repairs from some sections of road across the state because of high concentration of vehicular movement,’’ he said.
Akintola said the department had bought the equipment required to repair the roads and would be working everyday from morning till night.
The special adviser appealed to the people to bear inconveniences suffered during the course of the repairs, and cooperate with their personnel.
He debunked criticism that the repair work carried out on the roads were substandard, saying the repair works were carried out in compliance withthe standard process.
“There is a process for repairing the roads. We start from cleaning the affected section, cut and reclean. After, we add crush stones, cement, a bit of water and leave for compaction to take place.
“It is after we have done all these that we would apply asphalt on it to level it up,’’ he said.
Akintola said they were partnering with local governments to ensure excellent service delivery.
Mr Toye Arulogun, the State Commissioner for Information, Culture and Tourism, said the major focus of government is security and infrastructural development.
Arulogun said that government had since inception ensured peace across the state and embarked on massive infrastructure development.(NAN)
