Ijebu-Ode (Ogun), Jan. 16, 2018 (NAN) The Chairman, Ijebu-Ode Local Government, Mr Gbolade Oduwole, on Tuesday warned against illegal wastes and bush-burning activities, saying that it could trigger-off uncontrollable wildfires during the dry season.
Oduwole gave the warning while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Ijebu-Ode, Ogun.
He said people must stop the practice of waste management through illegal burning.
According to him, this practice is not acceptable globally and therefore must be curtailed locally.
“During the dry season, fire tends to burn more rapidly and endlessly due to favourable atmospheric conditions like less humidity, strong winds and natural fuels found readily in dehydrated debris.
“These conditions make fire difficult to tame, that is why wildfires are more common during the dry season, therefore, burning debris is never a wise option in waste management,’’ Oduwole said.
He said rather than burn waste to clear the environment; it could be segregated from source and converted through composite to manure, as not all wastes were useless.
“Papers, sachets, plastic bottles and such can be recycled to produce other useful items. We must begin to exploit and imbibe the culture of recycling,’’ he added.
Oduwole reiterated the local government’s resolve in ensuring a cleaner and healthier environment for all, adding that an environment conscious society was the pedestal needed to attain sustainable development. (NAN)
