Yenagoa, Dec. 12, 2017 (NAN) The Bayelsa Football Association (FA) on Tuesday said it would provide balls and technical assistance to the state’s Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) for the maiden late Clinton Thompson Football Competition.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the competition, fixed for Dec. 18 to Dec. 22, was for media houses and veteran footballers.

The competition, tagged “Clinton Thompson Cup’’, is organised in honour of Mr Clinton Thompson, the pioneer president of the South-South SWAN who died earlier in 2017.

Mr Poubeni Ogun, the state’s FA Chairman, told sports writers in Yenagoa that the association was ready to work with SWAN for the success of the competition.

Ogun said the event, aimed at reawakening the spirit of sportsmanship among journalists was in line with sports development, especially football.

“The FA and SWAN have been in partnership; so, in this competition, we are going to be working together and we will take it as our own event.

“We will take care of the prize money, technical assistance and balls but all will be discussed at the committee level,’’ he said.

Mr Alambo Datonye, the Chairman of SWAN, said the trophy for the competition tagged was donated by the body’s National President, Mr Honour Sirawoo.

Datonye explained that the Cup was to immortalise the late Thompson.

He thanked the FA for their benevolent gesture. (NAN)
