Abuja, Dec. 9, 2017 (NAN) The teams of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nasarawa and Bayelsa, among others, on Saturday advanced to the round of 16 at the 2017 Nigeria Taekwondo Open Championship.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the championship, which is in its inaugural edition, commenced at the Abuja National Stadium on Saturday and will end on Monday.
In the -63 kg male category, NSCDC, Nasarawa, Bayelsa, Abia, Kano, Rivers and Osun States all progressed to the round of 16.
They were joined by the Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) Zaria team and Fortress Taekwondo Club.
The first match in the category saw Taiwo Emmanuel of Fortress crush Ammaar Luqman of Ondo 32-1, while Victor Osaremen of NSCDC defeated Mika’ilu Haruna 24-8.
Frederick Laikpo of Bayelsa defeated Gideon Idoko of Kano 10-2, while Anthony Ejembi of Nasarawa outclassed Chinonso Chukwueke of Imo 30-3.
Jamilu Dambaba of ABU Zaria beat Arisa Daniel of Abia 17-9, while Charles Anyanwu of NSCDC defeated Ismaili Mohammed of FCT 14-11.
Also, Macdonald Obabofa of Bayelsa beat Joshua Aladetan of the Nigerian Army, after the match was decided by the Referee’s Punitive Action (PUN).
NAN also reports that teams from 20 states, clubs and institutions, including two African countries — Niger and Cameroon — are taking part in the three-day championship.(NAN)
