Benin, Dec. 7, 2017 (NAN) The Edo chapter of Nigeria Veterinary Medical Association (NVMA) on Thursday urged the state government to establish veterinary centres
in each of the 18 local governments of the state.

The NVMA Chairman in Edo, Dr Peter Osagie, made the call when he led members of the group on a courtesy visit to Gov. Godwin Obaseki in Benin.

According to him, the establishment of the centres will ensure functional clinics, veterinary doctors and abattoirs in some cases where animal disease control have become problematic.

He said the centres would broaden the scope of veterinary services in the state.

He added that “there is need to set up all-encompassing technical committee of animal and human health professionals to work out strategies for the containment of emerging and reemerging zoonotic diseases.”

Osagie said that when established, veterinary service centres would help government to monitor diseases that spread from animal to man such as ebola and monkey pox.

In his remarks, Gov. Obaseki, who was represented by his Deputy, Mr Philip Shaibu, said the Edo Government would not hesitate to accept ideas from professionals that would help to drive the state to greater heights.

Shaibu said some of the recommendations of the NVMA were already on the state government’s agenda. (NAN)
