Folklore
By Taiye Baiyerohi
Lagos, Dec.7, 2017 (NAN) Bukola Orobiyi, popularly known as “Adunni Nefrettiti”, on Thursday urged Nigerian musicians to inculcate the folklore genre in their music to promote African culture and sustain its vibes.
Orobiyi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that folklore was all about infusing proverbs, language, riddles and jokes into contemporary music to make them more meaningful.
NAN reports that folklore is composing songs that exhibit the traditional beliefs, customs and stories of a community, passed through the generations by words of mouth.
According to her, this kind of music is usually embedded in sound morals that are edifying to the soul.
She advised artistes to promote folklore to curb lurid and vague expressions in their music.
She appreciated some hip-hop musicians that had cultivated the habit of infusing folklore genre into their contemporary music.
“Nigerian musicians must ensure that some forms of African languages, riddles and jokes are included in their songs to promote our cultural heritage.
“These kinds of music portray positive morals for our children more than those with vague meanings; we are preachers and we must be cautious of what we preach to people out there, irrespective of their age.
“Folklore lives longer than those with vague messages because they speak the truth and instills sound morals in its listener,” Orobiyi said.(NAN)
