Lagos, Dec. 7, 2017 (NAN) Dr Eugene Itua, the Chairman, Nigerian Environmental Society (NES), Lagos Mainland Chapter, on Thursday urged the Lagos State Government to build more public toilets and properly manage the existing ones.

Itua gave this advice in an interview with News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos.

“While commending the state government for building public toilets in some strategic locations, it is also good to let the government know that there is need to build more toilets.

“The government should also ensure proper management of the public toilets as most times, the toilets are not kept clean.

“It is also good to ensure that dubious people do not hang around the public toilet areas by providing adequate security at such locations.

“The government should also find a way to incorporate public toilets in the ongoing reconstruction of bus stops across the state,” he said.

Itua said that this would go a long way in reducing the number of people who habitually urinated at the base of street lights and bridges as well as in other isolated and open places.

He said that market officials should be specifically charged with the responsibility of disciplining any trader who urinated or defecated inside plastic bottles or polythene bags in markets.

He noted that such bottles or polythene bags were often flung to the main road or deposited with other waste materials by street corners or road medians, waiting for evacuation by Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) officials.

He also urged the government to incorporate public toilets in the construction of new bus stops across the state. (NAN)
