Sokoto, Dec. 4, 2017 (NAN) Prof. Abdullahi Zuru,the Vice-Chancellor, Usmanu Danfodio University, Sokoto, has called for adequate budgetary allocation for perimeter fencing, land compensation and maintenance of students’ hostels.
Zuru made the call in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Monday in Sokoto.
He urged the National Assembly to ensure that tertiary institutions in the country were well protected in view of the challenging security situation.
“I believe I have the mandate of the entire university community for the request to kindly ensure that we have a good share of the education budget; the Assembly had done it before; we believe they can and will do it again.
“In particular, we shall be most appreciative if they can assist in ensuring that adequate budgetary allocation is made for perimeter fencing of the university, land compensation and maintenance of students’ hostels.’’
Zuru further commended the National Assembly committee’s constant visit to tertiary institutions, saying it clearly demonstrated the commitment and desire of the lawmakers to ensure that such institutions were properly governed and adequately provided for.
“We must commend the National Assembly committee’s commitment for the initiative taken to visit tertiary institutions in Nigeria.
“This will ensure that we deliver qualitative graduates to drive the growth and development of the country.
“Also, without any doubt, this initiative gives the committee the opportunity to get first hand information on the state of affairs at our tertiary institutions.
“It particularly facilitates interaction with heads of these institutions.’’
The vice-chancellor expressed gratitude and appreciation to President Muhammadu Buhari, Gov. Aminu Tambuwal of Sokoto, for their assistance to the University. (NAN)
