Damaturu, Nov. 15, 2017 (NAN) The Yobe Government says it will partner with livestock farmers and other stakeholders in its efforts to exploit the economic potential of the livestock sub-sector.
The Commissioner for Agriculture, Alhaji Mustapha Gajerima, said this in Damaturu on Wednesday at a workshop organised for livestock farmers, veterinary doctors and other stakeholders to explore the economic potential of the livestock industry.
“The government has vaccinated about six million herds of cattle, sheep, goats and dogs across the state,’’ he said.
He said that the annual vaccination of animals in the state was particularly geared towards improving the health of livestock so as to boost beef and dairy production.
“The Yobe State Government has constructed dams, ponds, water troughs and wells to provide the animals with adequate water supply,’’ he said.
Gajerima pledged that government would continue to provide health facilities, water points and food supplements for the animals across the state.
Also speaking, Dr Mustapha Gaidam, the Manager of Yobe Pilot Development Programme, said that the livestock in the state had been vaccinated against Trans-boundary Animal Diseases (TAD).
He listed the trans-boundary diseases as Contagious Bovine Pleuropneumonia (CBPP), Black Quarter (BQ) and Pest Petit Ruminants (PPR), which affected livestock, as well as Rabies that affected dogs.
Gaidam said that the workshop would educate livestock farmers on how to improve the health of their animals, adding that the farmers would also be aware of the nutritious feeds that were suitable for the animals.
Malam Musa Kalamu, a livestock farmer from Tarmuwa, said that the workshop had improved his skills in animal husbandry.
He said that the knowledge acquired at the workshop would facilitate efforts to change the traditional methods of livestock farming so as to boost meat and dairy production. (NAN)
