Abuja, Nov. 7, 2017 (NAN) Two hundred and sixty one (261) women and youths in Chukuku Community in Kuje Area Council, FCT, have been trained on the construction of energy-saving stove.

Mr Kelvin Dzeremo, Executive Director, Foundation for Economic Empowerment and Educational Development (FEED), an NGO, made the disclosure to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Abuja on Tuesday.

FEED’s Executive Director said that the beneficiaries were given a year training by the organisation from February 2016 to February 2017.

He explained that the construction of the stove had made a difference in the lives of the women living in the community.

He said that the stove was constructed in a manner that it reduced smoke emission thereby making it to be environmental-friendly.

“The stove does not have any negative effect on the environment.

‘‘It (stove) does not cause land degradation or desertification, the aim of the training is to improve the well-being of the people in the community.

“We are extending the project to other communities in the FCT, because the efforts will help to reduce a lot of environmental challenges in the country,’’ he said.

Dzeremo added that the organisation had trained the people on the importance of dry season farming to increase their income.

“We encourage them to embrace dry season farming and we tell them through this that they can harvest crops three times in one year.

“So as they are planting, they are also planning how to harvest the previous crops they have planted.

“We taught them how to practice irrigation regularly to enable the crops to grow.

‘‘They irrigate their farms during the dry season period and within three or four months the crops are ready for harvest.

“They plant crops such as maize, melon, beans, tomatoes, among others and the crops are really producing bountifully,’’ he said.

Dzeremo said that the training had reduced hunger, poverty and help the community to increase agricultural production. (NAN)
