Asaba, Nov. 2, 2017 (NAN) The Chairman of Delta Sports Commission, Chief Tony Okowa, says the commission is proposing a total sum of N3.7billion to execute its projects in 2018.
Okowa said this on Thursday in Asaba during a budget defence meeting with the State House of Assembly Committee on Youths and Sports.
He said that the amount would be used for the purchase of equipment and maintenance of existing sport facilities in the state.
The commission chairman also said that part of the fund would also be used for the development of stadium, purchase of utility vehicles as well as the construction of athletes’ hostel at Orerokpe in Okpe Local Government Area of the state.
Okowa explained that the construction of the hostel would cost N100 million, while the construction of the Warri City stadium would also cost N50 million.
He further said that the commission was proposing the sum of N130million for the proposed Delta Sports Festival.
Okowa noted that the essence of the festival was to discover and groom talented youths across the state.
He, therefore, appealed to the committee to make adequate budgetary provision for the commission.
Responding, the Chairman of the Committee, Mr Emeka Nwaobi urged the commission to upgrade facilities at the various stadiums across the state in order to boost sports activities.
He also urged the commission to work towards constructing more stadiums in the state especially in areas where where none existed.
According to him, having a stadium in all the local government areas of the state would go a long way in developing grassroots sport. (NAN)
