Birnin Kebbi, Oct. 30, 2017(NAN) Mr Ebenezer Oguelina, Chairman, Nigeria Bar Association (NBA), Kebbi chapter, has decried the “very poor state of courts” in the state.

“Basic infrastructure in the courts are in a very embarrassing state; in most courts, the walls have collapsed. In others, the ceilings and windows have given way.

“During the raining season, we all get wet because the roofs are leaking.

“In almost all the courts, there are no chairs and tables for staff, litigants and lawyers. I won’t even talk about fans,” he said.

Oguelina also lamented that most courtrooms were dusty, while gallery rest rooms were non-existent.

“The judiciary is a key aspect of the society where people seek justice and fair play. It is a hallowed sanctuary of justice we must respect,” he said.

He advised the state government to renovate the courts and provide basic infrastructure to enhance efficiency in the dispensation of justice.

The NBA Chairman also called for improved working conditions for judges and other judiciary staff, to motivate them for optimal service delivery.

“Very often, judiciary workers go on strike which affects the course and speed of justice. That will not be necessary if the system treats them fairly and gives them their dues,” he said. (NAN)
