Abuja, Oct. 30, 2017 (NAN) The Radio, Television, Theatre and Arts Workers Union (RATTAWU) on Monday inaugurated an eight-woman committee to enhance gender equality in the union.
The National President of the union, Mr Kabir Tsanni, said while inaugurating the committee in Abuja that the decision was in accordance with his campaign promise to carry women along and give them a voice.
Tsanni said that women were catalyst of socio-economic development, adding that when women are empowered the effects are always transformational.
“By this inauguration, I have fulfilled my first promise to empower women among other things; this is because women are the catalyst for development, thus the need for us to support them.
“In RATTAWU, we have outlined the role women will play to enhance gender affirmation in the union and Nigeria at large in line with the International Labour Organisation convention.
“This is necessitated by the fact that a woman needs to be protected in the workplace,” he said.
The RATTAWU president said that its gender policy was aimed at promoting and enhancing the human person and bringing forth their potentialities for the good of all.
According to him, empowering women to be formidable in the union will bring some changes that will take the union and the nation to the next level.
Tsanni stressed that the strength of any trade union was based on each member having an equal say and together building a collective voice.
He advised that the committee be replicated at the state councils to enhance gender equality at the grassroots.
Mrs Jane Ozoemena, the Chairperson of RATTAWU, Abuja Chapter, said that women are more effective at building consensus and advancing the desires and aspirations of any group.
Ozoemena commended President Muhammadu Buhari for ensuring that women played a key role in his administration.
“I, therefore, want to charge every woman that is being inaugurated today that you have to perform in order to get more women running for public offices, to be role model.
“To our president, who has been inspired by the change mantra, you have done well, we will certainly play the ball to the right direction,’’ She said.
A committee member, Mrs Amina Dogonyaro, who is also the Northwest Zonal Coordinator, RATTAWU, promised to ensure that the committee did its best to deliver on its assignment.
Dogonyaro said that the committee would do all within its power to make women more productive in their various work places.
“Workplace conditions are still not conducive for the woman, our priority is to make our work places conducive so that women can put in their best,’’ she said. (NAN)
