Abuja, Oct. 25, 2017 (NAN The Abuja Branch of the American Society of Civil Engineers (ASCE) on Wednesday said it would prioritise awareness creation in schools across the FCT to restore integrity in the engineering profession.

Mr Odafen Okolo, the newly inaugurated pioneer President of the branch, said this in his acceptance speech in Abuja.

He said the association had developed a deliberate programme targeted at enlightening secondary school students on the roles and importance of civil engineers in the society.

Okolo said the idea was to “catch them young” and let them understand the importance of integrity in engineering practice.

“We will mentor them to understand that it is not the science, not the technology but the integrity and obedience to the oath of service,” he said.

He said the society would also focus on self-development programmes aimed at equipping civil engineers on quality service delivery.

Okolo pledged to partner with relevant engineering regulatory bodies to address infrastructural challenges in the country.

He said the ASCE would put up inventory on the state of infrastructure as well as advice on how to maximise investment and improve on infrastructural development.

Mr Blessing Oboh, the President of Nigeria International Section of ASCE said the Abuja International Branch was given approval to operate by ASCE Headquarters in the USA.

He said the formation of the branch became necessary following the increasing number of ASCE members resident in Abuja and its surrounding states. (NAN)
