Warri (Delta), Oct. 16, 2017 (NAN)The Delta House of Assembly says it is committed to partnering with relevant stakeholders in ensuring the sustenance of peace in oil and gas producing communities in the state.

Mr Daniel Mayuku, the Chairman of the Assembly’s Committee on Delta State Oil Producing Areas Development Commission (DESOPADEC), said this during a visit to the headquarters of the Commission in Warri on Monday.

Mayuku noted that sustainable peace was required at all times for development to thrive in the state, especially in oil producing communities.

He assured the commission that the Assembly would do all it could to ensure that it succeeded in its role as an intervention agency.

The chairman, however, noted that funding had been a major challenge to the commission, adding that the speed of development in oil bearing communities had not been impressive due to the current economic situation in the country.

Mayuku said that the Assembly would ensure that DESOPADEC was well funded in subsequent budgets.

The lawmaker advised the management of commission on the need for a realistic budget, especially in the area of funding of major capital projects in the areas.

Earlier, the Managing Director of the Commission, Chief Williams Makinde, had commended the lawmakers for the visit.

Makinde appealed to the committee to consider it a critical responsibility to make adequate budgetary provision to enable the commission to deliver on its mandate.

“DESOPADEC can only be better if stakeholders, including management, the Delta House of Assembly and the mainstream government put their acts together and strategise with a firm legislation on the way forward,’’ he said. (NAN)
