Enugu, Oct. 14, 2017 (NAN) An ophthalmologist, Dr Evelyn Agu, has advised parents to ensure a regular eye check for their children and wards in order to avoid complications in the future.

Agu gave this advice in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Saturday in Enugu.

She advised that parents should check the eyes of their children immediately after birth and before school age.

“Parents need to ensure that they do eye check for their children because they are not mature or reasonable enough to notice that some signs in their eyes can lead to problems in the future.

“Your child’s eyes should be checked shortly after birth, before admission into school at the age of three or four and throughout the school years, as needed to ensure a healthy sight.

“Vision problem can interfere with performance in a child’s academic activities and this can cause lifelong disability if not properly and regularly checked,” she said.

Agu said that about 50 per cent of blindness and 90 per cent of eye injuries were preventable if parents could help in ensuring that their children go for eye check always.

According to her, eyesight is one thing people do not care for until they begin to lose it.

“Therefore, regular eye care is important, even when your child shows no sign of eye trouble’’. (NAN)
