Abuja, Oct. 10, 2017 (NAN) The Concerned Democrats of Conscience (CDC), an NGO, has decried the spate of recent character assassination by some politicians against loyal appointees of President Muhammadu Buhari.
Alhaji Ibrahim Modibo, President of the CDC, at a news conference on Tuesday in Abuja, said such character assassination was being carried out by a cabal that was not comfortable with the development strides of Buhari´s administration.
According to him, some members of the National Assembly are responsible for the development which he describes as unfortunate.
“As democrats of conscience, we are deeply concerned with the recent development in the National Assembly, to be specific the Senate, where some cabal are desperately embarking on character assassination.
“They also engage in blatant lies and outright falsehood to discredit loyal appointees of the president as a final onslaught to launch a vicious war against the administration of President Buhari.
“We have uncovered the plot by some members of the cabal who are not comfortable with the giant strides achieved by this administration in fighting corruption, taming insecurity and its efforts in combating crimes,´´ he said.
Modibo added that some members of the cabal were particularly not happy with the reforms introduced by the Inspector General (IG) of Police , Ibrahim Idris.
This, he said, was so because some of the policies and programmes introduced by the IG had stepped “on big toes´´.
He added that the policies had also ´´ruffled some influential feathers of some perceived untouchables, hence the deliberate efforts to break the defence line of the president´´.
Modibo further added that the objective of the cabal was to leave the president vulnerable to the vagaries of political opponents and unrepentant critics.
He specifically mentioned a lawmaker for making history for the wrong reason by publicly attacking the IG.
He said it was unfortunate that the lawmaker delved into “unconventional attacks that defer logic”, adding that he did not attack the IGP of corruption but went personal to attack his marital status.
Modibo noted that the IG was not at the plenary of the Senate for self-defence against some allegations.
He expressed suspicion of “a carefully planned hatchet job, hurriedly done to ridicule and blackmail some reputable members of the Buhari administration.
He added that his organisation was, however, determined and resolute to mobilise Nigerians and consolidate the gains of democracy by building a strong democratic culture that abhored impunity and corruption.
He expressed the belief that there was no alternative to a viable and vibrant democracy where government was held accountable to its people and the electoral process seen to be credible in the interest of all.(NAN)
