Jos, Oct. 10, 2017 (NAN) Mrs Keturrah Shammah, the Managing Director, the Girls’ Mission International (GMI), says the mission is launching a digital empowerment project for women and girls in 2018.

Shammah told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Jos on Tuesday that under the project, it would provide basic computer and entrepreneurial skills for women and girls.

She said that the NGO would collaborate with organisations such as Intel, World Pulse, Airtel, Andela and Technovation to undertake the project.

“We intend to commence the training of 200 women in 2018. This is to make the internet more accessible, relevant for them and to provide them with sustainable support for their endeavours.

“The internet is not only for chatting on Facebook and Whatsapp alone, women are perceived to only use the internet for entertainment purposes only.

“However, we will train them to get business ideas or expand existing ones by connecting with women globally in more than 300 countries that partake in similar activities.

“Their experiences will further fine-tune ideas nursed by some of the participants during the training thus learning from their success stories,’’ she said.

She said that GMI had distributed 455 sanitary towels to 200 girls in more than 20 schools in Jos and had awarded scholarships to 50 girls.

“We also supported girls with school aids such as uniforms, sandals and bags, amongst others.’’

Shammah said that the organisation was conceived to support girls and women in reaching their potential with focus on defending, protecting and promoting their right to education.

NAN reports that the Jos-based organisation was established in 2007 to improve access to education for women and girls.

It also supports reproductive health, wellbeing, and promotes access to economic opportunities for women to become self-reliant. (NAN)
