Benin, Oct. 5, 2017 (NAN) The Head of Department of Philosophy, Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo, Prof Mathew Izibili, has advised Teachers in the state to demonstrate empowerment ideals and create environment conducive “for thorough empowerment’’.

Izibili gave the advice on Thursday in a lecture he delivered at the 2017 World Teachers Day celebration in Benin.

In the lecture with the Theme: ” Teaching in Freedom,  Empowering Teachers”, the Don said that it was time to come to terms with the fact that freedom could be very fragile and should be handled with extra care.

According to him, teaching in freedom was a responsibility of all, adding that the realisation of the fact that where your freedom ends, another person’s own begins would help to better appreciate the free and safe work place at our disposal.

He also advised the teachers to encourage all efforts toward empowerment as well as applaud all empowerment successes.

The Chairman of the state branch of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Mr Iyalomhe Akhagbemhe, said the expectations of teachers in the 2017 celebration was heightened by the Theme of the celebration.

Akhagbemhe said that the theme was germane as there was no gainsaying that if teachers must give their optimal performance, they had to work in an unfettered environment.

He said that some areas in the educational sector in the state needed attention.

These, he said, include; nonpayment of 2016/2017 leave transport grant to primary school teachers as well as nonrelease of overdue promotions of primary school teachers.

Other areas, the chairman, said were the nonpayment of the N25,000 minimum wage to primary school teachers as well as the nonrelease of subvention to schools since 2012.

Others are; staffing and building a new Teachers’ House for the union. (NAN)
