3 men bag 4 months imprisonment each over theft of cell phone

Abuja Sept. 27, 2017 (NAN) A Karmo Grade 1 Area Court, Abuja, on Wednesday sentenced one Awalu Shaedu, Isah Mohammed and Umar sani, to four months imprisonment each for stealing a cell phone worth N5,500.

The Judge, Alhaji Abubakar Sadiq, however, gave the convicts N10,000 option of fine each.

Sadiq advised the convicts to desist from committing crime, adding that the sentence would serve as deterrent to other would be offenders.

“It is better to work and earn a living than stealing,’’ Sadiq said.

The convicts who reside at Mabushi Abuja, were convicted on a two-count charge of joint act and theft.

The convicts, pleaded guilty to the charges, and urged the court to tamper justice with mercy, explaining that it was their first time and promised they would never commit crime again.

Prosecutor Zannah Dalhatu, had told the court that one Abba Muideen of Mpape village Abuja, reported the matter at a police station, in Abuja on Sept. 24.

Dalhatu said that the convicts on that same date conspired and stole the complainant’s Techo phone valued at N5, 500 from his taxi, adding that the phone was found during police investigation.

Dalhatu said the offence is punishable under Sections 79 and 288 of the Penal Code. (NAN)
