Yenagoa, Sept. 15, 2017 (NAN) The Bayelsa Government has constituted a committee for the collection of data and screening of government staff with relevant degrees for the teaching profession.
Mr Jonathan Obuebite, the state Commissioner for Information and Orientation, made this known in a statement made available to newsmen on Friday in Yenagoa.
“It is also to harness issues of training and redeployment of civil servants to primary and secondary schools.
“`The aim is to send some qualified civil servants to the classroom.”
He said that data collation was part of the measures being taken by the state government to improve the education system in public sector.
“The move is targeting at re-deploying such civil servants to areas where their services will be more useful as well as address some of the challenges plaguing the public service.
“The council has also stressed the need for regular training and re-training of teachers at the Teachers’ Training Academy, Bulou Orua, Sagbama Local Government Area.”
According to him, the committee is headed by the Deputy Governor, Rear Admiral Gboribiogha Jonah (rtd).
Among other members of the committee are the Head of Service, Rev. Thomas Zidafamo, and Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr Talford Ongolo, while the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Education is to serve as secretary.
He said that the committee also has representatives from the state chapter of the Nigeria Labour Congress, Trade Union Congress, Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) and Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT).
In his remarks, the Commissioner for Education, Mr Markson Fefegha, expressed happiness over the constitution of the committee.
Fefegha said that the committee was expected to make recommendations regarding funding of primary schools as government had decided to employ teachers in 2018. (NAN)
