Enugu, Sept. 14, 2017 (NAN) The Association of Heads of Federal Establishments in Enugu State have expressed worry over the fitness level of civil servants in government ministries and agencies.

To this end, the association on Thursday staged a health walk on the streets of the capital city to improve fitness and fight obesity.

The health walk started from the Federal Secretariat at Independence Layout to Nkpokiti Junction and then to Bisalla Road through Presidential Road and back to the secretariat through Okpara Square.

The Chairman of the Health Walk Planning Committee, Mr Tanko Jang, said that the exercise was aimed at ensuring that the workers were physically fit to engage with their various duties.

Jang said that the fitness level of most workers had become worrisome and had led to a decline in productivity.

“We discovered that some workers even find it difficult to climb the staircase. This is a very big problem.

“Some of them find it difficult to go on field work especially when their superior officers visit from the headquarters.”

He said that the association was encouraging workers to see the importance of keeping a high fitness level and avoiding obesity.

The Chairman of the association, Mr Ngozi Uchela, said that the exercise was staged twice in a year.

Uchela lauded the turnout of members for the exercise, adding that the association would do everything to continually promote fitness among workers.

He urged civil servants in particular and Nigerians in general to take issues of fitness seriously so as to avoid untimely death.

“This walk is basically meant to improve physical fitness and we are happy that most of our members turned out,” Uchela said.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the theme of the walk was ‘The Importance of Periodic Exercise towards Enhancing our Health for Optimal Productivity’.

The exercise also featured a health talk by medical professionals and physiotherapists. (NAN)
