Mikang (Plateau), Sept. 14, 2017(NAN) At least 470 women were screened of cancer in Mikang on Thursday, when Mrs. Regina Lalong, wife of Plateau Governor, held a cancer awareness programme for women in the area.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the awareness campaign is one of the initiatives of Lalong’s Foundation – Support Women Initiatives to Transform Children Foundation (SWITCH).
Lalong said that the campaign was aimed at alerting women to the early symptoms of cancer and how to avoid the scourge.
She said that SWITCH had, since inception in 2016, treated 20 women with cervical cancer, while 10, out of 100 students and youths screened of sickle cell, were treated of the disease.
Lalong commended Mrs. Esther Vuelgap, wife of Mikang Local Government Chairman, for promoting cancer awareness in her community, and promised to work with local government cancer ambassadors to create a platform for intensive awareness.
Dr. John Junung of Jos University Teaching Hospital (JUTH), in his remarks, said that 6,950 cases of cancer were recorded in JUTH, between 1997 and 2014.
He advised men, who are 40 years and above, to go for prostate cancer screening, and also recommended cervical cancer screening for sexually active women every six months. (NAN)
