Lagos, Sept. 7, 2017 (NAN) A 44-year-old employee, Nasir Obafemi, who allegedly collected N140,0000 from his employer’s customer and failed to remit it to the company, was on Thursday charged in an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court in Lagos.

Obafemi was arraigned before Magistrate J.A. Adigun on a charge of stealing.

Obafemi, who resides at Awolowo Way, Ikeja, Lagos, however, pleaded not guilty and was admitted to a bail of N100,000 with two sureties in like sum.

Adigun said that the sureties should be gainfully employed and show evidence of two years tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

The prosecutor, Sgt. Godwin Awase, had told the court that the accused committed the offence on June 14 at Aguda, Ogba, Lagos.

He said that the accused, who was employed on June 1, collected N140,000 from a customer of his employer who ran a Micro-Finance Bank.

“The accused collected money from his company’s customer to the tune of N140, 000,” he said.

Awase said that the theft was discovered when the customer came with bank passport of recorded payment to the company where the accused worked.

He said when the company checked her name on the banking software, it was not be found.

“Investigation was carried out and it was discovered that the accused was the culprit.

“It was also discovered that the accused collected money from other customers without remitting it into the company’s account.”

The offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015(Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the accused may be jailed for three years, if found guilty of stealing according to the provisions of Section 287.

The case was adjourned until Sept. 19 for mention. (NAN)
