Lagos, Sept. 5, 2017 (NAN) The Coach of Owena Baseball and Softball Club of Akure, Kunle Ajayi, on Tuesday solicited for government and corporate organisations’ support to enhance the sport’s growth in the state.
Ajayi told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Lagos that the sport which is gradually gaining popularity in the state, if adequately funded would increase its profile.
He noted that the club’s performance at the recently concluded Ayangburen Baseball and Softball Championships organised by Baseline Foundation in Lagos was an attestation that the state could excel in the sport.
“We started baseball and softball in Akure some few years ago, and we have been able to introduce the sport to young people who have shown interest.
“There is still lots to be done to spread the sport to other parts of the state and we need the help of government to move the sport forward.
“Owena represented Ondo State in a national competition and won the U-13 category of the event held in August without any support,’’ he said.
NAN reports that Kwara Sliders Baseball and Softball Club of Ilorin and Owena won the U-17 and U-13 events of the Ayangburen Championship held in August.
Ajayi, who is also a former national baseball player, urged the Nigeria Baseball and Softball Association to redouble its effort in promoting the sport, especially at the grassroots. (NAN)
