Man, 20, docked for alleged theft of cell phone, N5,000 cash

Lagos, Aug. 28, 2017 (NAN) A 20-year-old  man, Emenike Ebuzueme, who allegedly stole a cell phone worth N106,000 and a wallet containing N5,000  from one Egbadom Akhere, was on Monday charged before an Ikeja Magistrates’ Court, Lagos.

Ebuzueme, whose address was not provided, is facing a charge of stealing.

Police Prosecutor Donjor Perezi told the court that the accused committed the offence with one other still at large on July 20 at  9.05 p.m under the Ikeja Bridge, Lagos.

He said the accused stole the complainant’s HTC M8 mobile phone valued at N105, 000 and  his wallet containing N5,000.

Perezi said the accused picked the pocket of the complainant on his way home from work.

“The complainant raised an alarm and the accused was given a hot chase by passersby.

“He was apprehended and taken to the police station while his accomplice escaped with the phone and wallet,’’ he said.

Perezi said the offence contravened Section 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015 (Revised).

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Section 287 stipulates a three- year jail term for offenders.

The accused, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.

In his ruling, the Chief Magistrate, Mr O.A. Layinka, granted him bail in the sum of N50, 000 with one surety in the like sum.

Layinka also said that the surety must be gainfully employed and should be a blood relation of the accused

He said the surety should show evidence of two years’ tax payment to the Lagos State Government.

Layinka adjourned the case until Sept. 11 for mention. (NAN)
