Coalition of NGOs advocate proper restructuring of PHC agencies

Keffi (Nasarawa State), Aug. 11, 2017 (NAN) A Coalition of NGOs on Friday, called for proper restructuring of Primary Healthcare agencies in the country.

The group made the call in Keffi, Keffi Local Government Area of Nasarawa State at the end of a four-day capacity building training programme for over 30 NGOs.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the training had coalition of NGOs from Nasarawa, Benue, Niger and Plateau as well as journalists.

Speaking to journalists, Felo Richie-Adewusu, the Advocacy Campaign Leader for Mamaye Evidence for Action, an NGO, said that the training was to build capacities of members of the coalition.

She also said the training was also meant to improve on their skills for them to properly collaborate with other stakeholders in bringing primary health care under one roof.

“The training is to build the capacities of civil society coalitions, especially for those of them we are supporting to work on full implementation of PHC under one roof in their respective states.

“We intend to build their capacities to enable them properly engage policy makers and other stakeholders on policy influencing issues,” she said.

Dr Tunde Segun, Country Director, Mamaye Evidence For Action, said that the NGO discovered that most states in Nigeria had not established Primary Health Care Development Agencies in their areas.

“We also discovered that in some states the agencies are not properly structured and there is problem with the existing law that created them.

“So, we build capacities of the coalition members to enable them intervene properly to address the problem with PHC under one roof in their respective states,” he said.

He said that the NGO intervened in many states in the country to ensure proper structure and functioning of the agencies for better service delivery.

Segun also said that the NGO had carried out similar trainings for coalition of NGOs in the South-East, South-West, South-South North-East, and North-West and now it was the turn of North-Central zone.

He called on state governments to support efforts toward achieving PHC objectives under one roof to better the lives of the people at the grassroots. (NAN)
