Sokoto Assembly urges state govt. to assist victims of flood disaster

Sokoto Aug. 8, 2017 (NAN) The Sokoto State House of Assembly on Tuesday called on the State Government to assist flood victims in Tambuwal local government area and environs in the state.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the incidents occurred last week.
The call was sequel to a motion moved by Alhaji Sule Romo (APC- Tambuwal West) and seconded by Alhaji Mode Sanyinna (APC- Tambuwal East) at plenary.
Romo, while moving the motion, said that the fundamental objectives of the present administration were to provide social amenities and bridge the gabs of infrastructural deficit in the state.
“It becomes so imperative to call on the relevant authorities on the recent flood disaster, which occurred in Barca, Madaci, Bakaya and Maya villages of Tambuwal local government.
“The areas became a flood ravages for years due to lack of good drainage systems and the inhabitants of the villages are predominantly farmers, traders and civil servants that contribute immensely to the economic development of the state.
“The people now have various forms of hardships as result of heavy down pour in the area last week, many houses were flooded, properties destroyed, farm land and crops were completely submerged and damaged,” he said.
The Lawmaker added that many of the inhabitants of the area were forced out of their houses that still remained inhabitable because of remnants of the flood.
He said that the reoccurring and devastating flood being experienced year in, year out had worsened this year.
“If nothing urgent is done to liberate and rescue the area, there is likelihood of outbreak of diseases associated with polluted environment such as cholera,” Romo said.
Meanwhile, the members unanimously adopted the motion when it was put to a voice vote by the Deputy Speaker, Alhaji Abubakar Magaji who presided over the Assembly sitting. (NAN)
