Lafia, Aug. 6, 2017 (NAN) Nasarawa state government has constituted a committee to workout modalities to capture its civil servants in the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), Gov. Umaru Al-Makura, has disclosed.

The governor made the disclosure on Sunday in Lafia at the closing ceremony of a three-day workshop organised by the state branch of Nigeria Medical Association (NMA).

The governor, represented at the occasion by Adis Mohammed, Chairman, Nasarawa State Primary Healthcare and Development Agency, said that government had set aside N40 million to kick-start NHIS for its work force.

“A committee has already been set up chaired by Daniel Iya, the Commissioner of Health to workout modalities for the take-off of the scheme,” he said.

Al-Makura said that government is currently building a comprehensive Primary Healthcare Centre in Kwandere village near Lafia.

He added that government had concluded plans to build same structures in all the 13 LGAs of the state in line with practices in other developed nations.
The governor, who pledged to support the NMA, assured the association that government would do its best to improve healthcare facilities in the state.

Earlier, the state Chairman of NMA, Dr Edeh Christopher, said the workshop was organised to deliberate on strategies of tackling and eradicating diseases in the state.

“We intend to use this opportunity to review the strategies of tackling various challenges facing healthcare delivery in the state,’’ he said.

Christopher said the association would sensitise the public on the need to maintain personal and public hygiene as one of the key prevention measures against diseases.

He appealed to the government to pay the outstanding allowances of members of the association.

The chairman of the occasion, Prof Innocent Ujah, while commending the NMA for organising the workshop, expressed hope it would afford its members the opportunity to improve on their profession.
Ujah commended the state government and the management of Dalhatu Araf Specialist Hospital Lafia for commencing training of resident doctors in the hospital.

According to him, the training will go a long way to enhance capabilities of medical doctors and ensure effectiviness in the discharge of their duties.
