Lafia, Aug. 3, 2017 (NAN) The Principal, School of Nursing and Midwifery, Lafia, Mr Zari Solomon, says the school will admit not more than 50 students for the 2017/2018 academic session.
Solomon spoke in Lafia on Thursday when he led the management of the institution and that of the School of Health Technology, Keffi, before the State House of Assembly Adhoc Committee on Health.
He said that though the institution had sold 1,000 admission forms, a maximum of 50 students would be admitted in order to maintain health standards of the institution.
“We will only select candidates for admission who meet with the necessary health requirements and the admission quota.
“The admission into the school is also based on the directives of our regulatory agency and the facilities and manpower available.
“Last year, we sold 820 forms and admitted not more than 50 students, and this year we have sold 1000 forms to applicants at the rate of N5000 per form.
“We are going to admit not more than 50 students for the 2017/2018 academic session so as to maintain standard.
“We always want to adhere strictly to our admission quota because we want to give the students the best based on facilities on ground, considering the importance of health to the socio-economic development of the country,” he said.
Alhaji Jibrin Giza, Permanent Secretary of the State Ministry of Health, also spoke at the session.
He said that the ministry was doing its best to ensure full accreditation of courses that were yet to get it in both institutions.
Giza assured the lawmakers of the ministry’s readiness to collaborate with them in order to improve on the health and standard of living of the people of the state.
Earlier, Mr Peter Mbucho, (PDP-Akwanga North), the Chairman, House Committee on Health, said the lawmakers decided to invite the officials to rub minds on the admission quota of the schools.
“Our invitation is not to witch-hunt anybody, but to find out certain things concerning the admission of students into the state school of Nursing, Lafia and School of Health, Technology, Keffi,” he said.
Mbucho said the assembly would continue to enact laws that had direct bearing on the lives of the people of the state and the country at large.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that some of the members of the committee who spoke during the meeting called for a reduction in the price of admission forms in view of the economic situation in the country. (NAN)
