Lagos, Aug. 3, 2017 (NAN) Visionscape Sanitation Solutions Ltd. says it has cleared 80 black spots in 27 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) of Lagos State since it began to deploy Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) technology.
The firm’s Manager, Ms Maimuna Maibe, made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on Thursday in Lagos.
RFID is a wireless system comprising two components – tags and readers, which are being applied to ensure effective waste management in the state.
Maibe said that the technology had been helpful since the company started in the first 30 days of its operation, which it had used for the mobilisation stage of the contract.
According to her, managing waste in the 21st century requires more than just a conventional approach of collection and disposal of waste.
“We have started using it in the trucks and we have been monitoring them.
“We have been able to notice some errors, little human issues with the drivers, like parking where they are not supposed to.
“Our bins are fitted with infrared and tags and code attached to each of them; so we know the bin that is supposed to be in Ikeja, for Ikoyi and other places.
“If the bin that is supposed to be in Ikoyi miraculously finds itself in Epe, we will be able to tell that is a wrong spot,” she said.
Maibe said that the trucks would have signals that would be able to open up the bin locations as they drive through the communities.
She said that the sanitation solutions firm had won a 10-year Residential and General Waste contract from the Lagos State Government, adding that the contract was to ensure the Cleaner Lagos Initiative (CLI)
According to her, the CLI is focused on improving the environment to make it cleaner, safer and healthier for Lagosians.
She said that it was promoting a harmonised and holistic approach to the challenges as well as achieving result on improving operational efficiency.
Maibe said that in order to achieve the CLI, Visionscape had started a Deep Cleaning Operation, a 60-day black spot elimination scheme.
She said that the scheme, which began in July, was aimed at sensitising communities in promoting a cleaner and aesthetic environment, while emphasising individual roles and responsibilities in preserving and protecting the environment. (NAN)
