Security guard gets bail over alleged theft of cooking gas cylinder

Abuja, July 28, 2017 (NAN) A Magistrates’ Court in Karu, Abuja, on Friday granted N100, 000 bail to Joseph Daniel, 25, of Karu over alleged theft of a cooking gas cylinder belonging to his employer.

The defendant is standing trial on a charge of stealing punishable under Section 289 of the Penal Code.

The Magistrate, Mr Abdulmajeed Oniyangi, admitted the defendant to bail with two reasonable sureties in like sum.

Oniyangi said that the sureties must be persons with reliable source of income and reside within the jurisdiction of the court.

He said that the sureties must submit their drivers’ licence or national identity and passport photographs with the court.

Earlier, the prosecutor, Mr Ade Adeyanju, informed the court that the matter was reported to Karu Police Station by Lois Oteh, also of Karu on July 20.

Adeyanju told the court that the complainant informed the police that the defendant was a security guard in her apartment since April.

He said that the complainant left defendant at his duty post on the said date and stole her 12kg cooking gas cylinder from where she kept it beside her kitchen.

The prosecutor said that the value of the cylinder was N 12, 000, while the value of the gas contained in it could not be determined.

Adeyanju said that the defendant also left his duty post to an unknown destination after perpetrating the act, but was later arrested.

He said that the stolen item could not be recovered from the defendant during police investigations.

After listening to the charge, the defendant pleaded not guilty.

Oniyangi, however, adjourned the case until Aug. 21 for hearing. (NAN)
