Evacuation
Prague, July 21, 2017 (dpa/NAN) No fewer than 260 people were evacuated from a famous spa hotel in the Czech resort of Karlovy Vary after a fire broke out in its sauna, CTK news agency reported on Friday.
The hotel guests and staff had to be evacuated from the 16-storey building after the fire broke out in the basement sauna of the Thermal Hotel, CTK cited a fire service spokesman as saying.
It took two and a half hours to bring the fire under control and several people had to be treated for smoke inhalation.
The cause of the fire and the extent of the damage were not immediately clear.
The fire crew called in an aerial ladder from the city of Plzen 70 kilometres away because of the height of the building, which stands 65 metres tall.
The state-owned Hotel Thermal’s bare concrete architectural style, is a landmark of the west Bohemian town. It was opened in 1977.
The hotel was the venue just a few weeks ago for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival, attended by many Hollywood stars. dpa/NAN)
