Ado-Ekiti, July 20, 2017 (NAN) An Ado-Ekiti Customary Court on Thursday dissolved the two-year-old marriage between one Temitope Balogun and her husband, Olagoke, over frequent beatings and threat to life .
The President of the Court, Mrs Olayinka Akomolede, dissolved the marriage after Olagoke, the respondent, failed to appear in court.
“After hearing from the petitioner and the failure of the respondent to honour the court, I hold that the marriage has broken down irretrievably and it is hereby dissolved,’’ she said.
She awarded the petitioner custody of the only child of the marriage and ordered the respondent to pay N5, 000 as monthly allowance for the upkeep of the child.
Akomolede also held that the respondent would commence payment of the N5, 000 on or before Aug. 31 through the court registrar.
She, however, said both parties would be responsible for the child’s education.
Akomolede also granted the respondent unrestricted access to the child.
Temitope, a resident of 4, Ile-Ileri, Adehun, Ado-Ekiti, had told the court that her husband was fond of threatening her life whenever they had a misunderstanding.
She said her husband had once threatened her with a knife because she refused to have sexual intercourse with him.
“He came home drunk that night and I told him I will not have sex with him; he became very violent,’’ she said.
The petitioner also said that her husband often beat her over little arguments.
“We are blessed with a child and I have been responsible for his up keep and the maintenance of the house,’’ she said.
The respondent, Olagoke, failed to appear in court after he was served with the petition three times.(NAN)
