Plan International, FMOH begin review of life skills training manual

Abuja, July 17, 2017 (NAN) Plan International, Canada, a development partner, says it has commenced review of national life saving skills training manual for better implementation of maternal and child health care system in Nigeria.

The exercise is being carried out in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Health.

Dr Aaliya Bibi, a Health Adviser to Plan International Canada stated this at the inauguration of five-day stakeholders meeting on Monday in Abuja.

She said the exercise became necessary because of the need to standardise the manual for essential practice.

Bibi explained that the process of updating the manual was complex, adding that it required strong coordination among a team of technical experts and consultants.

“I am pleased that the Federal Ministry of Health brought together renowned consultant- Gynecologists, Obstetrician, Neonatologists, Pediatricians and Nurses- for the review”

“Our effort is to ensure that all health workers across the country have the best tools and resources to work with, to ensure high quality care for mothers, newborn and children” she said.

The adviser said that organisation had a lot of projects in Nigeria aimed at reducing maternal and infant mortality.

Bibi stated that her organisation was also working in the country to tackle the root causes of why women, adolescent girls and their children could not access maternal and child health services.

She promised that the organisation would continue to engage health doctors and nurses to ensure they were equipped with essential skills and knowledge to provide appropriate care for pregnant women and children.

In his remarks, the Director from Reproductive Health Division in the ministry, Dr Kayode Afolabi, said that the stakeholders’ meeting would fill some gaps in existing training manual.

Afolabi explained that World Health Organisation  (WHO) and Plan International had identified some gaps that Would be captured in the reviewed manual. (NAN)
