Lagos, July 16, 2017 (NAN) In a view to securing the communities better,

The Vigilante Group of Nigeria (VGN) on Sunday in Lagos appealed to the Federal Government to transform the group into a Federal Agency that would be saddled with community policing.

Mr Emmanuel Ayisire , the Deputy Commander of the group, Lagos Chapter,  made the appeal while speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN).

Ayisire said with the group legally recognized, its members would be able to secure their communities better.

He appealed to Acting President Yemi Osibajo to throw his weight around the VGN Bill which he said was awaiting its third reading at the lower chamber of the National Assembly (NASS).

“We appeal to the Acting President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo,  to give the VGN Bill an executive push so that when passed into law, it will fast track the  transformation of the VGN into a Federal Agency for community policing,” he said.

Ayisire also lauded the statement by the Acting President on the need for the formulation of a national policy on community policing as a good innovation.

“VGN commends the Acting President on the eventual recognition and affirmation of community policing which the group has been championing for the last five years.

“The VGN has been saying that community policing will serve as the panacea to such security challenges as   kidnappings, ritual killings and insurgency groups facing the country.

“We wish the Federal Government will take cognizance of the efforts and contributions of VGN toward instituting community policing in the country,” he said.

Ayisire said the VGN was present in all the states of the federation, and was committed to the laudable objectives of promoting community policing across the country.

“We are also committed to the protection of lives and properties of the citizens and this cannot be done alone without the assistance of the Nigeria Police Force.

“In line with true community policing perspective, VGN has its men domiciled in their areas of operation.

“VGN men are much more familiar with the terrain, topography and demography of their areas, a factor which will enhance internal security operations,” he said.

Ayisire said that VGN, with the help of the Nigerian Police Force, would positively improve the internal security of the country.  (NAN)
