Abuja, July 7, 2017 (NAN)The Complete Women Foundation, an NGO, says it is establishing mentoring club on sex education in FCT government schools to promote the interest and well-being of girls.

Mrs Ireti Ade-Oyinleye, the President of the NGO made this known in an interview with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN)  in Abuja on Friday.

Ade-Oyinleye said that the aim of establishing the club was to create awareness on issues that posed a threat to the well-being and safety of girls in the FCT.

She said that the establishment of the club was to support girls who were exposed to violence and to advise them on ways to overcome the situation.

“This is a campaign targeted at girl’s sexual abuse, rape and other related issues.

“Everyday, millions of girls in the society see their rights violated without having the opportunity to express the trauma they are passing through.

“As a result, the girls are constrained into submission both to men and wider society as dictated by “morality” and patriarchal culture.

“On countless occasions, girls are accused of or blamed for the violence they experience, and are often held responsible for the consequences of the violence of which they are victims.

“The introduction of the club will help to fight against violence in the school environment; also the idea will give the girls opportunity to express their challenges and experiences.

“Because some of them cannot tell their parents what they are facing rather they prefer telling an outsider who might not give then good advice.

“But with the school club, through our interaction with them, they can be bold to tell us their experiences.

“I believe that the situation can change when each one of us fulfills our role and becomes a hero in the fight against violence and sexual abuse suffered by girls in the society,’’ she said.

Ade-Oyinleye said that the objective was to document best practices in tackling, reducing and eliminating violence in schools in the FCT.

She said that the school club would help to train, nurture and empower the girls to be assets to the society.

She said that the organisation was also sensitising women on their collective roles and refocus the attention of women and the girls to the right values, culture and character reformation through group based interactive programmes.

She said that the aim of the sensitisation was also to educate the women and girls on how they could discover and develop their inherent potential and abilities through capacity building.

Ade-Oyinleye said that the orgainsation had collaborated with other relevant government organisations to enable it achieve  its goals. (NAN)
