Suspension

Tripoli, July 5, 2017 (dpa/NAN) Libya’s Mitiga International Airport air traffic was briefly suspended on Wednesday due to clashes between militants that left at least five people dead and 18 injured, Deputy Transportation Minister Hisham Shkiwat said.

Shkiwat said that flights resumed shortly afterwards.

Social media accounts attributed to the Mitiga International Airport said that “all flights had  been suspended until further notice”, before it announced reopening the airfield.

Clashes erupted on Tuesday between two Libyan tribes along the coast across from the airport.

Shots could still be heard till on Wednesday morning.

Tripoli is host to the UN-backed National Accord government that remains at loggerheads with the internationally recognised parliament convened in the eastern part of Libya.

The capital city has seen frequent fights between rivals since the ouster of long-time dictator Moamer Gaddafi. (dpa/NAN)
