Refuse
By Zubairu Idris
Katsina, July 4, 2017(NAN) The Katsina State Environmental Protection Agency (SEPA) has warned residents against indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage channels, to forestall flooding.
Alhaji Isa Barda, the Executive Director of the agency, made the remark on Tuesday while inspecting the evacuation of refuse in drainage channels in Katsina metropolis.
He said the ugly trend made the agency to embark on the evacuation in Katsina, Daura and Funtua Local Government Areas.
Barda said the exercise would also improve sanitary conditions in the towns and prevent outbreak of diseases.
He noted that although the government had constructed drainage across the state, people still dump their wastes in it, thereby, blocking the water channels and causing flooding.
The executive secretary said the agency had established waste disposal points to enable residents dispose their refuse properly.
He, however, lamented that most residents formed the habit of indiscriminate dumping of refuse in drainage in spite of the dangers associated with it.
Barda therefore urged communities to complement the agency’s efforts by clearing their drains and adopting best sanitation habits.
Also, a members of the state House of Assembly Committee on Environment, Alhaji Sagir
Suleiman, urged residents to regard refuse collection as a collective responsibility.
He assured that the house would continue to make laws that would improve both personal and environmental hygiene in the state. (NAN)
